Your wardrobe

How to clear out your wardrobe

Most wardrobes have a few pieces that never get worn. Sorting them is easier with a simple system.

Take everything out

Pull it all out, one section at a time if the whole lot feels like too much. Seeing everything in one place makes the decisions easier.

Make four piles

Keep: you wear it and you love it. Sell: it’s in good shape, but it isn’t you any more. Mend: you’d wear it if it were fixed. Pass on: it’s past selling, so donate it or recycle it.

Be honest with the maybes

Not sure? Ask yourself when you last wore it, and whether you’d buy it again today. If the answer to both is no, it’s probably ready for its next wardrobe.

Get the sell pile ready

Wash or air everything, check for marks, and photograph the labels while you’re at it. Then list a few pieces at a time. Our guide to listing your first piece walks you through it.
